About
Why have a website focused on Shakespeare? Mention Shakespeare to most people today and they will:
- Wrinkle up their nose in disgust.
- Protest: “He’s too hard. I don’t understand Shakespeare.”
- Run away.
At Mad Shakespeare, we believe it doesn’t have to be that way. We want to show how Shakespeare is still relevant, but we also want to make Shakespeare relevant today.
Most Shakespeare websites out there are either educational, geared toward academics, or written by casual fans. Not this one—we intend to fill the gap and provide high quality articles for normal people to read. We like to think we’re normal ourselves.
All of Mad Shakespeare’s contributors are qualified to write about Shakespeare. Many of us hold a master’s degree in Shakespeare from University College London. After a year of being asked, “What will you do with a degree in Shakespeare?” our editor had the idea for this website and invited her fellow students to help her get started. The website went live October 7, 2009, approximately one month after we finished our degrees.
